MSS SP-75 

specification covers factory-made, seamless and electric welded carbon and low alloy steel, butt-welding fittings for use in high pressure gas and oil transmission and distribution systems, including pipelines, compressor stations, metering and regulating stations, and mains.

MSS SP-75 Standard Practice governs dimensions, tolerances, ratings, testing, materials, chemical and tensile properties, heat treatment, notch toughness properties, manufacture and marking for high-test, butt-welding fittings NPS 60 and smaller. Dimensional requirements for NPS 14 and smaller are provided by reference to ASME B16.9.

The term “welding fittings” applies to butt-welding fittings such as elbows, segments of elbows, return bends, caps, tees, single or multiple-outlet extruded headers, reducers, and factory-welded extensions and transition sections.

Fittings may be made to special dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances, or of wrought materials other than those covered by this Standard Practice by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser. When such fittings meet all other stipulations of this Standard Practice they shall be considered as being in partial compliance therewith, providing they are appropriately marked.

ASTM A234 Scope


1.1 This specification covers wrought carbon steel and alloy steel fittings of seamless and welded construction covered by the latest revision of ASME B16.9, B16.11, MSS-SP-79, MSS-SP-83, and MSS-SP-95. These fittings are for use in pressure piping and in pressure vessel fabrication for service at moderate and elevated temperatures. Fittings differing from these ASME and MSS Standards shall be furnished in accordance with Supplementary Requirement S58 of Specification A 960/A 960M.
1.2 Optional supplementary requirements are provided for fittings where a greater degree of examination is desired. When desired, one or more of these supplementary requirements may be specified in the order.
1.3 This specification does not cover cast welding fittings or fittings machined from castings. Cast steel welding fittings are governed by Specifications A 216/A 216M and A 217/A 217M.
1.4 This specification is expressed in both inch-pound units and in SI units. However, unless the order specifies the applicable “M” specification designation (SI units), the material shall be furnished to inch-pound units.
1.5 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the specification.

SCOPE

1.1 General
This Standard covers overall dimensions, tolerances,ratings, testing, and markings for factory-made wrought buttwelding fittings in sizes NPS 1⁄2 through NPS 48 (DN 15 through DN 1200).
1.2 Special Fittings
Fittings may be made to special dimensions, sizes,shapes, and tolerances by agreement between the manufacturer and the purchaser.
1.3 Fabricated Fittings
Fabricated laterals and other fittings employing circumferential or intersection welds are considered pipe fabrication and are not within the scope of this Standard.
Fabricated lap joint stub ends are exempt from the above restrictions, provided they meet all the requirements of the applicable ASTM material specification listed in section 5.
1.4 Standard Units
The values stated in either metric or U.S. Customary units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the U.S. Customary units are shown in parentheses.The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system must be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this Standard.
The designation for size is NPS for both metric- and customary-dimensioned fittings. Fitting pressure rating is associated with the connecting wall thickness of pipe of equivalent size and material.
1.5 References

Measuring the out diameter

1.5.1 Referenced Standards. Standards and specifications adopted by reference in this Standard are shown in Mandatory Appendix II. It is not considered practical to identify the specific edition of each standard and specification in the individual references. Instead, the specific edition reference is identified in Mandatory Appendix II. A product made in conformance with a prior edition of referenced standards and in all other respects conforming to this Standard will be considered to be in conformance.
1.5.2 Codes and Regulations. A fitting used under the jurisdiction of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, the ASME Code for Pressure Piping, or a governmental regulation is subject to any limitation of that code or regulation. This includes any maximum temperature
limitation, or rule governing the use of a material at low temperature.
1.6 Service Conditions
Criteria for selection of fitting types and materials suitable for particular fluid service are not within the scope of this Standard.
1.7 Welding
Installation welding requirements are outside the scope of this Standard.
1.8 Quality Systems
Nonmandatory requirements relating to the fitting manufacturer’s Quality System Program are described in Nonmandatory Appendix A.
1.9 Convention
For the purpose of determining conformance with this Standard, the convention for fixing significant digits where limits (maximum or minimum values) are specified shall be rounded off as defined in ASTM E 29. This requires that an observed or calculated value shall be rounded off to the nearest unit in the last righthand digit used in expressing the limit. Decimal values and tolerances do not imply a particular method of measurement.
1.10 Pressure Rating Designation
Class, followed by a dimensionless number, is the designation for pressure–temperature ratings. Standardized designations for flanges per ASME B16.5 referenced in this Standard are Classes 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500,and 2500.

ASME B16.11, Forged Fittings, Socket-Welding and Threaded

ASME B16.11 Standard covers ratings, dimensions, tolerances, marking and material requirements for socket-welding and threaded forged fittings. These fittings are designated as Class 2000, 3000, and 6000 for threaded end fittings and Class 3000, 6000, and 9000 for socket-weld end fittings.
B16.11 is to be used in conjunction with equipment described in other volumes of the ASME B16 series of standards as well as with other ASME standards, such as the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the B31 Piping Codes.
Careful application of these B16 standards will help users to comply with applicable regulations within their jurisdictions, while achieving the operational, cost and safety benefits to be gained from the many industry best-practices detailed within these volumes.
