Self-cleaning filter
Applications of an Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainer. This device is designed to continuously remove suspended particles from various types of liquids. It finds applications in industrial plants that use different water sources (such as river, lake, well, or sea water) for cooling, descaling, lubrication, spraying, quenching, and more. It can also effectively strain liquids other than water, including chemicals, acids, white water (paper mills), sewage, and ammonia flushing liquor (coke plants).
The installation of the strainer is done on the discharge side of a pump or in any piping system operating under positive pressure. It requires a minimum working pressure to effectively clean the straining media. The strainer is compact in size with small dimensions for face-to-face, width, and height.
The design of the strainer consists of a conical drum with threaded holes containing various types of straining media. The drum is supported on a rotating shaft with bearings and is enclosed in a body with a vertical backwash slot opening next to the drum surface.
During operation, the liquid to be strained enters the inlet connection located at the lower part of the body and flows around the outer surface of the drum. The suspended particles are trapped in the media pockets, while the clean liquid passes through the media and exits through the bottom opening of the drum via the outlet connection.
To clean the straining media, a backwash process is initiated. As each row of straining media passes the backwash slot, there is a reversal of flow that flushes the suspended particles from the media pockets. This reversal of flow is caused by a pressure differential between the interior of the strainer and the atmosphere. The backwash flow rate is typically low and varies based on the amount of suspended particles in the liquid.
For automatic control of the backwash process, an optional feature can be provided. Instead of a manual backwash valve, an automatic control system can be implemented. This control system may consist of an electric or pneumatically operated ball valve that is actuated by a timer or a pressure differential switch, or both. This allows for intermittent backflushing as per the set parameters.
Overall, the Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainer is a versatile device that effectively removes suspended particles from various liquids. Its compact design, easy installation, and optional automatic backwash control make it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.
