Self-cleaning filter

Applications of an Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainer. This device is designed to continuously remove suspended particles from various types of liquids. It finds applications in industrial plants that use different water sources (such as river, lake, well, or sea water) for cooling, descaling, lubrication, spraying, quenching, and more. It can also effectively strain liquids other than water, including chemicals, acids, white water (paper mills), sewage, and ammonia flushing liquor (coke plants).

The installation of the strainer is done on the discharge side of a pump or in any piping system operating under positive pressure. It requires a minimum working pressure to effectively clean the straining media. The strainer is compact in size with small dimensions for face-to-face, width, and height.

The design of the strainer consists of a conical drum with threaded holes containing various types of straining media. The drum is supported on a rotating shaft with bearings and is enclosed in a body with a vertical backwash slot opening next to the drum surface.

During operation, the liquid to be strained enters the inlet connection located at the lower part of the body and flows around the outer surface of the drum. The suspended particles are trapped in the media pockets, while the clean liquid passes through the media and exits through the bottom opening of the drum via the outlet connection.

To clean the straining media, a backwash process is initiated. As each row of straining media passes the backwash slot, there is a reversal of flow that flushes the suspended particles from the media pockets. This reversal of flow is caused by a pressure differential between the interior of the strainer and the atmosphere. The backwash flow rate is typically low and varies based on the amount of suspended particles in the liquid.

For automatic control of the backwash process, an optional feature can be provided. Instead of a manual backwash valve, an automatic control system can be implemented. This control system may consist of an electric or pneumatically operated ball valve that is actuated by a timer or a pressure differential switch, or both. This allows for intermittent backflushing as per the set parameters.

Overall, the Automatic Self-Cleaning Strainer is a versatile device that effectively removes suspended particles from various liquids. Its compact design, easy installation, and optional automatic backwash control make it suitable for a wide range of industrial applications.

Automatic Backwash Strainer "IWAKO"

Automatic Backwash Strainer

Automatic Backwash Strainer "IWAKO"

operation of the Automatic Backwash Strainer "IWAKO" The Automatic Backwash Strainer works in the following steps:

-Unfiltered fluid enters the strainer through the inlet into the lower chamber, where it is slowed down and settled debris is collected.

-The fluid then passes upward and radially through a wedge wire straining element, which filters out debris larger than the slot size of the wire.

-The clean fluid continues through a properly proportioned flow path and exits through the strainer outlet.

-Backwashing can be initiated manually or automatically when the pressure difference between the line pressure and atmosphere is detected.

-During backwashing, a hollow tubular backwash assembly, connected to the atmosphere, rotates slowly in contact with the internal straining element. Only a small portion of the screen is isolated to ensure uninterrupted strainer operation.

-The pressure differential creates a reverse flow across the screen and into the tubular backwash assembly. A port shoe optimizes the effectiveness of the backwash jet stream.

-Debris is carried into the full port backwash manifold and discharged through the backwash connection. Throughout the operation, flow remains uninterrupted to minimize flow loss.

The "Automatic Backwash Strainer" is controlled by an electrical panel, actuated valve, and a differential pressure switch. The cleaning cycle can be initiated manually, based on differential pressure, or using a timer.

Automatic Screen Self Cleaning Filter "IWAKO"

Auto Self Cleaning Filter "IWAKO"  Product principle

The water flows through the screen and the particles are retained on the inside of the screen of the filter element. The filtered water then flows out through the outlet.

When the particles accumulated to a certain number and the pressure differential increases to the pre-determined level, the flushing cycle starts.

It include two steps: First, the automatic drain valve opens on the drainage outlet. Then, electronic motor drives the cleaning brushes which are inside the screen, the solids are expelled through the drain valve.

Filters continue to supply filtered water even during the flushing cycle. The whole working system is controlled by a smart box which has several control modes

Unlike manual strainers that require frequent cleaning and maintenance downtime, the auto self-cleaning feature keeps the strainer functioning optimally without the need for manual intervention.

Automated Cleaning Cycle: The self-cleaning mechanism is programmed to initiate cleaning cycles based on preset parameters, such as time intervals, differential pressure, or flow rates. This automation eliminates the need for manual initiation and ensures consistent and timely cleaning of the strainer.

Cleaning Methods: "IWAKO" Auto self-cleaning strainers employ various cleaning methods to remove accumulated debris from the screens. Common methods include backwashing, where a portion of the water flow is diverted in reverse direction to flush out debris, and rotating brushes or scraper systems that physically remove particles from the screen surface.

Minimal Water Loss: During the cleaning process, "IWAKO" auto self-cleaning strainers minimize water loss by using a portion of the filtered water to backwash the screens. This reduces the overall water consumption of the cooling system compared to manual cleaning methods that require significant amounts of fresh water.

Pressure Monitoring and Control: The strainer system is equipped with pressure sensors that monitor the pressure drop across the screens. If the pressure exceeds a specified threshold, indicating significant fouling, the cleaning cycle is automatically initiated. This proactive approach helps maintain consistent flow rates and optimal cooling efficiency.
